Fourth of July Events in Washington, D.C.

After all, our perch in the D.C. metro area puts you just a hop, skip, and a jump from the high-profile happenings going down on and around the National Mall. Those include the National Independence Day Parade, underway along Constitution Avenue NW from 11:45 AM to 2 PM. Then there’s the A Capitol Fourth concert, free and open to the public on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol and also broadcast live on PBS; the gates open at 3 PM on the Fourth.

The holiday evening in D.C. concludes with the Fireworks on the National Mall, which’ll start firing from both sides of the LIncoln Memorial Reflecting Pool a little after 9 PM.

The annual two-week Smithsonian Folklife Festival, which has been going strong since 1967, will also be underway during the Fourth of July stretch. This fantastic event produced by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife & Cultural Heritage, which is held on the National Mall and free to attend, features two exhibits this year: Creative Encounters: Living Religion in the U.S., examining the country’s rich and diverse spiritual and theological makeup, and The Ozarks: Faces & Facets of a Region, considering both the physical and cultural geography of the Ozark Highlands.

Also on tap during the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, per usual, will be plenty of live music, film presentations, and dancing courtesy of the Ralph Rinzler Main Stage. The extensive and varied lineup of performers for this year’s festival includes:

  • Melissa Carper
  • The Legendary Ingramettes
  • MARK Harmony
  • The Ozark Highballers
  • Riyaaz Qawwali
  • Carrie Newcomer
  • YIVO Ensemble
  • Big Smith
  • Jake Blount
  • No-No Boy
  • Bomba Yemeyé
  • Po’ Ramblin’ Boys
  • Yasmin Williams

Fairfax, VA Independence Day Fun

There’s lots else going on in Northern Virginia, though, to mark the Fourth of July. Over in nearby Fairfax, Virginia, for example, you could take in some preliminary festivities leading up to the holiday itself: the Hometown Celebration on July 25th, for example, held at Veterans Amphitheater and featuring live tunes by the City of Fairfax Band, food trucks, and other fun, plus the Evening Show & Fireworks at Fairfax High School on the evening of July 2nd. On the Fourth itself, Downtown Fairfax will hold its Independence Day Parade (a tradition since 1967) from 10 AM to noon.

A Falls Church Fourth

On Sunday, July 2nd, Falls Church will have its own fireworks extravaganza at Meridian High School. Meanwhile, in past years the Falls Church Village Preservation and Improvement Society has presented a reading of the Declaration of Independence at the Falls Church City Hall—it’s not clear, as of this writing, whether that event’s happening in 2023, but it’s worth keeping tabs on the Society’s website just in case.

Great Falls 4th of July Hometown Celebration & Parade

In Great Falls, meanwhile, you could attend the 4th of July Hometown Celebration & Parade on Independence Day from 8 AM to 12:30 PM at the Great Falls Village Centre.
