Memorial Day Weekend is the traditional summer kickoff, of course, but it’s also first and foremost a solemn occasion to remember those who’ve given their lives in service of the country.
An amazing and moving tradition takes place at Arlington National Cemetery with its National Memorial Day Observance on May 29th. The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment—the “Old Guard”—will place American flags at service members’ gravesites in the cemetery as well as at the U.S. Soldiers’ & Airmens’ Home National Cemetery as part of the Flags In ceremony.
Another special place to observe Memorial Day is the National Museum of the United States Army, which will hold events throughout the weekend. Admire the outdoor flag display lining the museum’s Path of Remembrance and the Unit Tribute wall, and attend the Memorial Day Remembrance and Moment of Silence in the lobby at 10 AM on the 29th.
On Sunday, May 28th, meanwhile, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts will serve as the venue for a stirring (and free!) concert featuring “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, followed up by a magnificent fireworks display.
Naturally there’ll be plenty else to see and do over Memorial Day Weekend, including town parades and festivals as well as all manner of family-friendly attractions officially opening for the season. And some of the action will take place right here at Capital One Center up in the rooftop park, The Perch, where the Star Hill Biergarten will show a free family movie at 6 PM on Sunday, May 28th.
You’ll be well positioned to take in Memorial Day Weekend events and activities across the greater D.C. and Northern Virginia area with a studio or suite here at The Watermark Hotel.
