Holiday Events, Attractions, & Performances in Washington, D.C. & Northern Virginia

As you might imagine, the nation’s capital is an amazing place to be during the holiday stretch. And so is Tysons Corners, VA, one of the linchpins of the D.C. metro area.

Here’s a survey of only some of the holiday happenings that’ll be yours to enjoy on a getaway at The Watermark Hotel.

The National Christmas Tree & the Pathway of Peace

Head over to the White House Ellipse (only about a dozen miles away from The Watermark Hotel) and admire the 40-foot-tall Norway spruce cut from the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia that this year is serving as the National Christmas Tree.

This handsome and stunningly decorated conifer will be lit up each evening through New Year’s Day and can be appreciated free of charge every day till then from 10 AM to 10 PM (and until 11 PM on Friday and Saturday nights).

The National Christmas Tree comes flanked by 58 smaller trees arrayed along the Pathway of Peace, each representing a U.S. state, territory, and Bureau of Indian Education and Department of Defense Education Activity schools. Students from all of these states, territories, and schools designed the charming ornaments that decorate these holiday trees.

The National Menorah

Another iconic holiday landmark of the Ellipse at the White House is the National Menorah, which happens to be the largest menorah (and surely one of the best known) in the world. It’s been lit to celebrate Hanukkah each year since 1979.

The U.S. Capitol Tree

West Virginia’s Monongahela National Forest also supplied this year’s U.S. Capitol Tree, aka the People’s Tree, which is sourced from a different national forest each holiday season. Situated on the Capitol’s West Lawn, the 63-foot-tall Norway spruce hailing from the Monongahela’s Greenbrier Ranger District will be lit from dusk until 11 PM every evening through January 1, 2024.

Concerts at the National Cathedral

The National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. (less than a half-hour from The Watermark Hotel in Tysons, VA) is presenting a number of holiday programs this year. Among the offerings are Handel’s Messiah from December 8th through the 10th; Christmas With the King’s Singers on December 10th; Christmas Lesson & Carols December 23rd and 24th; and the Christmas Day Organ Recital on (you guessed it) December 25th.

Season’s Greetings at the United States Botanic Garden

Enjoy a spectacular holiday display over at the United States Botanic Garden courtesy of the Season’s Greetings installation, yours to enjoy at the Outdoor Gardens through the first of the year. Holiday lights and decor and a plethora of poinsettias help compose the scene, also enhanced by an outdoor model train display.

Season’s Greetings will be offering extended hours on three Thursdays this month: December 14th, December 21st, and December 28th, with the Garden staying open until 8 PM and featuring live holiday music those nights as well.

The Downtown Holiday Market

Knock off some of that 11th-hour holiday shopping on a stay at The Watermark Hotel by steering your way to D.C.’s 19th annual Downtown Holiday Market, underway through December 23rd daily from noon to 8 PM. This dazzling marketplace features more than 70 vendors and exhibitors on two blocks of F Street NW (from 7th to 9th streets NW), with live music and other festivities as well.

The grand entrance to the Downtown Holiday Market is right in front of the National Portrait Gallery.

Christmas Illuminations at Mount Vernon

George Washington’s historic estate will be marking the yuletide stretch with Christmas Illuminations, featuring some spectacular holiday fireworks over the Potomac River on the evenings of December 15th and 16th. Those pyrotechnics come backed up by light installations, holiday music, and the 18th-century-style Winter Market, among other seasonal Mount Vernon attractions.
