The National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C.’s National Mall and Tidal Basin never look so utterly postcard-perfect as when the many Japanese cherries are abloom in one of America’s signature springtime spectacles. The National Cherry Blossom Festival continues here through Sunday, April 16th, with the fabulous Festival Parade taking place the Saturday before.

Bluebells & Bloodroots at Riverbend Park

Planted cherry trees aren’t the only dazzling blossoms to admire in our neck of the woods this time of year. Spring ephemeral wildflowers turn Northern Virginia’s forest floors into a colorful carpet. Over at Riverbend Park in Great Falls—just a hop, skip, and a jump from Tysons—you can celebrate the groundcover spectacle at Bluebells & Bloodroots, learning about the natural history and folklore of spring ephemerals while admiring them firsthand.

Spring Events at Mount Vernon

George Washington’s historic estate, one of the region’s top year-round attractions, has a stacked spring calendar of events. These include Animal Family Day (April 22 – 23), which’ll feature a bevy of farm critters—from lambs and hogs to oxen and horses, including unique heirloom breeds—plus history talks and beekeeping presentations.

On April 29 and 30, meanwhile, Mount Vernon hosts its popular annual Spring Plant & Garden Sale, with oodles of vegetables, herbs, shrubs, trees, and other flowery and leafy goodness on offer.

Alexandria Symphony Orchestra: Rite of Spring Concert

Welcome in the season with the perfect soundtrack—Stravinski’s Rite of Spring—provided by Maestro James Ross, celebrated pianist Natalia Kazarya, and the Alexandra Symphony Orchestra at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center on April 15.

The program will also feature Edvard Grieg’s beloved Concerto for Piano as well as the Cuban composer Guido López Gavilán’s Mojito con saoco, plus a talk by Maestro Ross and Kazarya in the symphony hall’s Terrace ahead of the music.
